IsiXhosa Heritage Writings with English Translations Volume 1 is the first of the bilingual Ancestral Voices series in isiXhosa. The contributions in isiXhosa are small in number, but great in extent – the histories of Balfour and Makalima alone run to many chapters. This volume is a mixture of history and customs of a number of nations in the present Eastern Cape province. The history covered focuses on the following clans or nations: the amaGcaleka and amaBhaca, the amaTshezi and the amaMpondomise and the abaThembu, as well as various accounts of first contact between white colonists and the indigenous people of the Eastern Cape. The customs sections outline various items from those nations: initiation practices for boys and girls, rituals of wedding and birth and death and burial. We hope you enjoy reading about these cultures and their rich history.
